London’s vanishing gardens

The conversion of front gardens into car parking is just one of the trends which has led to a worrying decline in green spaces in London, says a new report from the London Wildlife Trust.

The capital is also losing private gardens to sheds and decks as people give up the long-standing English love affair with lawns. It is estimated that 24% of London’s area, around 37,00 hectares, is made up of domestic gardens. Lawns and tree canopy accounts for 14%, or 22,000 hectares.
