Town centre markets count cost of free parking at supermarkets, MPs warn

Free parking at out-of-­town supermarkets and retail parks is undermining town centre markets, according to a report by the Communities and Local Government Committee.

Anne Main, committee member and MP for St Albans, said: “Sadly, more markets are in decline than thriving. We have become more sophisticated as shoppers — we like the convenience of parking and on-line shopping. Markets have struggled to maintain a role in this sophisticated environment.”
