London Mayor bids for rail take over

London Mayor Boris Johnson has set out plans to take over responsibility for managing the capital’s inner suburban rail services.

Under his proposals, the Department for Transport would allocate Transport for London a rail budget and, as franchises came up for renewal, inner-suburban services would be specified to the standards applied to the limited rail routes that passed to TfL in 2007 as the ‘London Overground’.

Patronage on Overground services has grown by about 110%...
