Councils scrap busway access charge after operator protests

Bus operators will not pay access charges to use the £89m Luton Dunstable guided busway in its early years of operation after warning that the payments would undermine the viability of services.

The busway is due to open in 2013 and project promoters Luton and Central Bedfordshire councils expect it to add £400,000 to their annual revenue costs. The councils had been planning to recover some of the costs through an access charging regime in the same way that Cambridgeshire County...
