Daniel Johnson is correct in one respect in his Viewpoint on personalised travel planning ('Personalised travel planning techniques must be revamped to safeguard a future for the tool' LTT 22 Dec 05). His calculations are indeed simplistic - but in more ways than he himself acknowledges.

His critique appears to rest on the reported cost of one recent TravelSmart demonstration project in Sheffield. Unfortunately, he omits to mention that the quoted cost of this project included substantial...
