To my surprise I got as far as the third paragraph of Paul Biggs’ Swampy letter before I found anything to take issue with, although his worries about land-take would apply even more to motorways than to railways, high-speed or not, given that HS2 would carry the equivalent of a six-lane motorway in about half the width.

Yes, of course “everyone benefits from roads”, non-users included, but some benefit more than others. By the same token railways benefit non-users too, just...
