Cycling prosecutions down by 95% over last 20 years

The number of prosecutions brought against cyclists in England for offences such as reckless riding, riding on footways and inadequate lighting has fallen by 95% in the last 20 years, figures released by the DfT show.

Prosecutions for lighting and reflector offences fell from 4,441 in 1982 to just 166 in 2003; cycling on footways fell from 1,488 to 82; and careless/reckless cycling fell from 354 to 77. The biggest slump in prosecutions occurred in the late 1980s but the figures have continued...
