Bristol City Council has ordered a study of an underground light rail system for the conurbation, which could use driverless vehicles. 

The “pre-feasibility study” will “identify the viability of light rail underground systems to provide a rapid transit system across the West of England”. The West of England authorities are Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset.
