The transport secretary has rejected an accusation that the Government's much-vaunted 'Northern Powerhouse' is "a litany of disasters" in an interview.
The Manchester Evening News today asks Patrick McLoughlin about delays to rail electrification, smart ticketing and the Ordsall Chord, alongside an article in which it details the problems, including a legal challenge over the latter scheme. The Northern Powerhouse is seen as politically crucial to the Conservatives and the Chancellor. Speaking at the Farnworth tunnel in Bolton, part of the electrification of the Preston line, he said: "Some of these big projects do take time. It is right that the proper planning takes place."
He expresses hope that a report into cost overruns on electrification that he hopes it will provide a firm timetable for the Transpennine scheme and disappointment over the spiking of a Greater Manchester contract for a smart-ticketing scheme - but with an offer of assistance.
