A 20mph speed limit is still too high for safe cycling

Stephen Plowden in his recent letter proposes to assist cyclists by setting the speed limit to 20mph (LTT 16 Mar). What should be the ideal arrangement for cyclists? I would argue that they should be able to take and hold the centre of traffic lanes, as motorbikes and motor scooters currently do. Positioning the cyclist in the middle of the lane makes the cyclist more visible to other road users, reduces the amount of ‘negotiation’ that cyclists need to do in order to turn right,...
