SF Muni goes for smart surveillance

San Franciso’s Muni plans to install a network of high-tech behavioural recognition surveillance cameras on its subway. They will be used to detect unusual behaviour and alert authorities. The US$3.6 million, five-year project, will see 400 units supplied by Houston, Texas-based Behavioural Recognition Systems fitted inside stations and at tunnel portals.

The technology will store information on normal situations at particular locations and times, and use behavioural-recognition software...
