New franchising plans from the DfT set the scene for a major fight for supremacy in the British rail business
The new rail franchising programme announced by the UK Department for Transport in August will represent the most intense period of tendering the industry has seen since privatisation. The value of the contracts will run into tens of billions of pounds, and be the most lucrative set of public transport operating contracts to have been offered anywhere in Europe.
