After leaving school at the age of 15, Lockhead began his career in passenger transport in his home town of Darlington as an apprentice engineer. He left school on the Friday and started his new job on the following Monday. “My Dad’s neighbour leant over the fence and I asked when I was finishing school,” Lockhead recalls. “He fixed it up.”
