Getting the facts straight on DfT’s rail funding plans

Oh dear, here we go again. At the slightest mention of investment in railways, Paul Withrington’s apoplexy gets his facts and figures in a twist (Letters LTT 03 Aug).

Firstly, the figure of £9.4bn is investment but £5.2bn of it is for schemes already committed in Control Period 4 (CP4). Only £4.2bn is new money for investment in CP5 and most of this will also go on Network Rail’s ‘credit card’ as the Coalition Government continues the previous...
