Industry puzzles over key drivers of rail passenger demand boom

The rail industry and the DfT are trying to understand what is driving much higher than anticipated rail passenger demand on much of the network, with Network Rail admitting last week that the factors are "not yet fully understood".

High levels of growth have prompted Network Rail to dramatically revise passenger forecasts for the north-west of England in the final version of the region's Route Utilisation Strategy published last week. The draft version of the document had forecast 6%...
