DfT presses Osborne for rail fares relief

Transport secretary Justine Greening is lobbying Chancellor George Osborne to  authorise waiving the coalition Government’s policy of raising rail fares by RPI+3% in England (except Merseyside) from January next year.

The confirmation of RPI at 2.8% in July means that, under the Government’s RPI+3% fares formula, regulated fares should rise by 5.8% from January. Some fares could rise by even more because train operators can use ‘flex’ to increase regulated fares by...
