Highway maintenance spending drops
Spending on road maintenance by English local authorities fell from £3.3bn in 2009/10 to £3.1bn in 2010/11, according to the DfT.
Maintenance expenditure by the Highways Agency fell more sharply, from £1.3bn to £0.8bn.
The Highways Conditions Index for all classified local authority roads in England was 100 in 2010/11, unchanged from the baseline of 2006/07.
In 2010/11, 70% of the classified local authority road network was considered to be in good condition and 5% was considered likely to require planned maintenance soon. The proportion of the trunk motorway network requiring further investigation of its surface condition has fallen from 6% in 2003 to 4% in 2011, with the proportion for trunk ‘A’ roads falling from 11% to 4%.
