Johnson sets his price for backing ministers’ high-speed rail plans

Billions of pounds of investment in London’s transport system will be necessary to accommodate high-speed rail passengers, London mayor Boris Johnson has told ministers.
Johnson also calls for additional expensive environmental mitigation work on the proposed HS2 route through West London but suggests the Government could save billions of pounds by scrapping the proposed high-speed line spur to Heathrow Airport (see panel).
