Prospective train operators will have to include plans for station travel plans in their bids for three franchises under draft plans published by the DfT.
The Department has launched a consultation on the specification for the East Coast, Greater Anglia and Essex Thameside franchises, which are all due to begin next year.
The DfT proposes seven additional station travel plans across the Essex Thameside area, complementing the existing pilot scheme involving Southend Central and Southend Victoria.
The consultation on the Greater Anglia franchise also promotes travel plans but makes no reference to how many will be required.
On East Coast the DfT says travel plans will have to be drawn up “where comprehensive Station Travel Plans are not already in place”.
The Department says operators must work with local authorities and other stakeholders to develop the plans. For Essex and Anglia it “will be up to local authorities to decide which stations they believe are important and whether station access is a local priority”.
The Department expects a station travel plan wherever additional car parking or cycle parking is provided.
